How regular eye care exams can save your sight

January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month. Glaucoma is a group of diseases that can cause blindness without having had any symptoms.
According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, more than 3 million Americans have the disease and 50 percent of the people are aware of their condition. Glaucoma is a serious disease.
This month not only raises awareness for the prevention of Glaucoma but also serves as a reminder for regular eye check-ups to prevent other eye care issues.
Dr. David Gaimari, optometrist at Othello EyeCare for Columbia Basin Health Association, said regular annual check-ups can prevent many eye issues by detecting and treating them early.
“Diseases of the eye are just like any other disease, the earlier you catch them, the easier it is to stop the progression or in some cases reverse it,” Gaimari said.
Macular degeneration, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy are some of the diseases that can affect your eyes. Annual exams also give your optometrist a chance to check your eyes for injury. If you have diabetes, these regular exams are vital.
“It is especially important to make sure you are checked at least yearly if you have diabetes,” Gaimari said. “Diabetics are more susceptible to eye disease and the patient may not notice symptoms until it is too late to save their sight.”
The most common form of glaucoma results from increased pressure in the eye. The pressure causes retinal cells to die. If left untreated, Glaucoma causes blindness.
The Glaucoma Research Foundation found people at higher risk for glaucoma get a complete eye exam every year, including dilation. Consult your optometrist for their recommendation.
Everyone is at risk for glaucoma, but the people at higher risk include African-Americans, people over 60, people with family members who have glaucoma, Hispanics in older age groups, Asians, steroid users or anyone who has had an injury to their eye. Other risk factors may include nearsightedness, diabetes and high blood pressure.
There is no cure for glaucoma, but it is possible to halt your vision loss with daily medications.
The best way to protect your sight is to get tested since there are usually no symptoms or pain until it is too late. Most people don’t know they have it until they notice significant vision loss, which cannot be regained.
Regular eye exams, as recommended by your optometrist, are essential to keep eyes healthy. Only you can take the steps necessary to keep your eyes healthy.

Everyone is at risk for cataracts as they age
Editor's note: Cataracts affect nearly 20.5 million Americans age 40 and older. By age 80, more than half of all Americans have cataracts, according to the National Eye Institute and Prevent Blindness America. Over the next several weeks, Pocono Medical Center and Pocono Eye Associates will offer Ask The Doctor readers a three-part series on cataracts providing information on the causes, symptoms and removal of cataracts.
Q: What is a cataract and what causes someone to get cataracts?
Simply stated, a cataract is opacity or dullness in the lens. The lens is otherwise transparent and located just behind the iris and the pupil in the front compartment of the eye.
It is shaped like a small, round candy. The opacity (or opacities) can form in different arrangements, sizes and shapes within the lens. Some opacities form a combination of different patterns, while others take no pattern at all.
For example, they can be spread thinly across the lens like fog or look like spokes on a bicycle wheel, pointing to the center of the lens. Others may look like a group of tiny clear air bubbles trapped inside the center of the lens.
While symptoms vary based on the patient's opacity form, number and location within the lens, all generally result in decreased vision. The role of the lens is to be clear and to focus images that we see onto the retina (the back of the eye), so that they can be sent back to the brain to be perceived as vision.
Eventually, these opaque clusters build up and cloud the lens, creating "dimness." This prevents light from passing through the retina. The small amount of light that does make it back to the retina gives the person a poor image quality. The vision may be discolored, scattered or defocused.
Often, these visual changes are so gradual that many patients do not recognize they have occurred. They may consciously or subconsciously compensate for this decrease in vision by avoiding certain visual tasks or by altering how they perform their usual daily activities (e.g., nighttime driving, reading and/or sitting close to a television or computer monitor). Many of these people complain that their glasses are not strong enough anymore.
It is important to note that cataracts are a natural part of the aging process that occurs over time; like grey hairs and wrinkles, all people will get them if they live long enough. However, heredity may also play a role in when a cataract may begin to form. There are also certain risk factors that can cause a cataract to form more quickly. The risk factors include:
1. Various diseases, especially diabetes, glaucoma and hypothyroidism.
2. Toxins, including corticosteroids (taken orally, topically or by nasal spray), tobacco and alcohol.
3. Trauma to the eye (e.g., injury, burns or prior eye surgery).
4. Exposure to radiation, X-rays or Ultraviolet light.
Most often cataracts will be diagnosed at your annual eye exam, and your eye professional will counsel you on treatment.

Cheap reading glasses bad for eyesight

Many people have bought reading glasses from market stalls and street opticians. However, experts declared that much as this action could save money in the short term, it could be putting their eyesights and health at risk, reports Sade Oguntola.
To avoid paying a large sum of money for a pair of reading glasses from an optician that might easily be lost or broken, many people resort to buying cheap glasses by the roadside and market stalls to help them see better.
Certainly, regardless of fashion trends, wearing spectacles or reading glasses is about seeing clearly and comfortably - not just appearance. But new research suggests that just buying any reading glasses without an eye examination to rule out diseases such as cataract and brain cancer, which impede good sight, may do more harm than good.
Although walking into any market stall or visiting a roadside optician to buy just any cheap reading glasses that are readily available is so easy and more pocket-friendly, eye doctors warn that in the long term, they can cost you your eyesight.
In fact, they declared that such off-the-peg glasses could cause eye strain, blurred vision, headaches or double vision.
Interestingly, buying even such a glasses from a big store while on a vacation abroad does not make it different from that bought from a roadside optician, say in Abuja, Lagos or other big cities in the country.
A survey by Consumer Champion, an international body, which checked 14 pairs from seven high street chains, found that many were not too suitable for use. Those carrying a higher prescription – plus 3.5 to plus 4 were particularly of most concern because they were not suitable for walking or other mobile activities. Their biggest problem is non-alignment, which means that the sight in one eye might be clear while the other is blurred. This could cause eye problems or a head tilt.
Eyeglasses are generally used for correcting the vision of persons with bad eyesight. The lenses are usually the most expensive part of the glasses, depending on the type of materials they are made from.
Nonetheless, Dr John Dongo, Chief Optometrist, University College Hospital, (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo State, declared that cost of reading glasses should not push people to buying reading glasses from a roadside optician or a stall.
According to him, “the association of opticians knows that there is quackery within the eye care industry and we are doing everything within our power to curtail it.”
However, Dr Dongo, the Chairman, Nigerian Optometrist Association, Oyo State branch, remarked that it was not difficult for people to know which optician to visit if a person wants to have good eye care.
According to him, “one will be able to recognise the right optician to consult by putting into consideration, where that optician’s office is situated, the basic equipments that are available as well as whether routine eye checks were provided rather than just refraction to determine the power of the lens to prescribe.”
“When a person comes in to have an eye test, the optician is expected to provide a comprehensive eye checkup. This should include checking the visual acuity, field of vision and the pressure inside the eye,” he said.
It is however slightly difficult for a person to know when a wrong reading glasses prescription was either bought or issued by a road side optician or a stall. According to Dr Dongo, “even if reading glasses are prescribed in an optical setting, the person is supposed to go back to the doctor after he had picked his reading glasses to have them checked to be correctly done.”
“A new reading glasses could have changed in terms of its axis and power. It takes only an expert to be able to tell if there is a problem and the effect such a reading glasses would have on the eye such as blurred images, headaches and tearing. Of course, wrong prescription would also contribute to poor productivity at work.
“From my experience, more than 50 per cent of people that wear glasses have on them wrong prescription, but only about 10 per cent will have symptoms that will require their going back to complain about their prescribed reading glasses. The remaining 40 per cent will wear their glasses for the next two years, until they come in for a change of their reading glasses.
Nonetheless, some persons might notice that they need to change their reading glasses more frequently than once in two years. According to Dr Dongo, “we expect that recognisable changes that might necessitate that one’s reading glasses be changed would take two years. But where the person requires changing his reading glasses very frequently, it might be due to diseases such as uncontrolled diabetes.
Dr Gboyega Ajayi, a consultant ophthalmologist, Ojulowo Eye Clinic, Mokola, Ibadan, Oyo State, explained that with roadside purchase of reading glasses, when a wrong prescription is given, such could have untoward effects.
According to him,” if the prescription is below what you need, you do not suffer any physical or functional damage to your eyes. However, if the person is longsighted, such may need to strain to see and if the person is shortsighted, such a person would find it difficult to see some things.”
“ However, in a case where a child is longsighted and such is given a low refraction or prescription, it may induce accommodative stress, which may lead to squinting of the eyes. Where there is an existing squint, it may worsen it, “ he stated.
But the situation is different when a higher prescription is given to a person with poor sight. ”The likelihood is that the person will reject it within one or two days of starting to use the glasses. Be it a person that is longsighted or shortsighted, because the person will not see clearly, such is likely to strain and end up developing headache,” he explained.
Sometimes due to disparity in the two eye’s ability to see, different prescription is made for the two eyes. However, with a reading glass picked from the stall, Dr Ajayi declared that this might not be possible.

5 Ways to Stay Healthy at Work
Cut the Noise
Keyboards clattering, doors opening and closing and, yes, voices, don’t just distract, they actually increase stress levels, studies show*. Which can lead to bad moods, lack of concentration and fatigue. Try noise cancelling headphones or speakers (but they work best where noise is regular, like the hum of machinery). Reduce eye strain and dry eyes by following the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, focus on something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Position your computer so that there is no reflected glare on the screen. And try to position the screen so that you gaze downward at about 14°.
Manage that Anger
Anger does not always result in fist-fights or throwing pencils, but it does affect performance. ‘Letting it all out,’ say studies*, is taken as an excuse to hurt the object of your anger. Instead, identify what causes anger and learn to control those triggers. Try repeating a phrase like ‘take it easy’ that will help
calm you.
Straighten Up
Back ache? Stiff shoulders? Neck pain? It may simply be bad posture. To prevent further damage, get an adjustable chair that supports your back and lets you sit with your thighs parallel to the ground. Use a lumbar pillow to keep your back in the right position. Make sure your elbow is resting comfortably in a straight line when you are typing. And take 5 minutes every hour or so to stretch. Load reminders on your computer or phone to help you.
Breathe Free
ACs cool things off, but they can also cause allergy flare-ups, air-borne respiratory infections and sinus problems. Tips of protecting from Computer Vision Syndrome
Whenever you sit long hours before the computer to watch your favourite contents or playing games or studying, you may have experienced the problems of muscle strain, eye pain, headache, eyestrain, tiredness, burning of eyes, dryness, redness, eye twitching and problem in focusing on computer monitor.
If your answer is in 'Yes', you are facing the problems of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).
CVS occurs when anyone concentrates on the computer monitor with diminished blinking of eyes to reads the content or to plays the game. The constant focus on computer without frequent blinking eyes can cause above mentioned problem to the computer users.
In long terms, CVS affects the vision too.
So, the doctors advised us to away from the computer as much as possible, but it is practically impossible for us at present computer era.
But, we can protect us by applying few tips that are given below:
1. Keep your monitor below to your eye level.
2. Keep a proper distance between your eyes and your monitor. Usually make a difference of 6 times of the width of the monitor.
3. Zoom the texts and readable material at the time of studying.
4. Use Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) monitor instead of Cathod Ray Tube (CRT) monitor. CRTs monitor has low refresh rate. Try to use new LCD monitor.
5. The normal blink rate in human eyes is 16?20 per minute while during working on computer, our eye blinking rate reduces to as low as 6?8 blinks/minute which cause dryness and redness of eyes. Focusing with efforts also puts strain on eyes' ciliary muscles that cause eyestrain and tiredness of eyes. We can reduce it by taking a break of two minutes at every 20 minutes intervals and enhancing the frequency of blinking the eyes during the work and keeping closed eyes during the relaxation period.
6. Practice the 20-20-20 exercise during working on computer. In 20-20-20, you will have to focus the eyes on an object 20 feet (6 meters) away for 20 seconds in every 20 minutes or close your eyes (which has a similar effect) for 20 seconds, at least 20 minutes. Both have similar effects. The first one gives a convenient distance and timeframe for a person to follow the advice from the optometrist and ophthalmologist.
7. Use a renowned eye-tearing drops (kindly take the advice of your ophthalmologist) to keep your eyes wet.
8. The person with decreased focusing capability should wear a small plus-powered (+1.00 to +1.50) pair of eyeglasses. It will help those in regaining their ability to focus on near objects.

The vast majority of ulcers are actually caused by a bug called Helicobacter pylori. This bug breeds deep inside the stomach lining eventually causing an ulcer.
However, although this bug is the principal cause of ulcers, there are several other ways to develop this problem. Medication such as aspirin, brufen, grandpa powders(r), disprin(r) and similar painkillers also destroy the inner lining of the stomach. However, spicy food is not to blame.

There is no scientific basis to 'detoxing'. The body is perfectly capable, in most instances' of removing harmful and waste products you ingest, digest and consume. The liver and the kidneys are your 'detoxing' organs and do the job better than any remedies sold by manufacturers. Nor do these organs require any help in most circumstances. Regular exercise and lots of fluids is usually all you need to get your system back in gear after the holiday season. Anything else, including colon cleansing, is a waste of time and money.
